Music and art help shape democracies!

With the bands "Bez Ladu A Skladu" from Trencin in Slovakia and "Erling Ramskjell and his eminent men" from Hamarøy/Bodø.

“Bez Ladu A Skladu” started as early as 1985, with critical lyrics about the Soviet regime of the time. They were even one of the bands that the New York Times described as "the group that helped bring down the Iron Curtain", NYT, 2009. The band: Peter Kaščák (bass), Martin Beďatš (guitar), Richard Rybníček (drums), Rasťo Kubica (saxophones), Peter Kohout (saxophones) and Michal Kaščák (vocals, keyboards).

Ramskjell & co. have been central in "building bridges" with several musical events both in Slovakia and in Norway. The bands give us a musical insight into what it means to live oppressed until the slogans of freedom. In Bandt, Erling, (vocals & guitar), has with him the fabulous: Anders Skoglund, (drums), Hallstein Sandvin, (bass), Kåre Ramskjell, (keyboards) and Kaja Ramskjell (vocals & choir).

The concert at Hamarøy is the conclusion of the major initiative Art of Democracy in Bodø.

If you have the opportunity, we encourage you to send support to Amnesty International to support the work they do for freedom, equality and justice for all people. The Vipps number is 2115.

This event is part of Democracy Week, October 5 - 11.

Banned Books Week aims to raise awareness of freedom of expression and democracy, and to provide a framework for conversations and debate on these topics. The week helps to strengthen preparedness against various forms of censorship, and is a celebration of the freedom to read. On Hamarøy we have decided to call it Democracy Week.
